I'm struggling with baby names myself, as names that I come up with, or are suggested to me, always conjure up an image of a student I'm teaching or have taught before!
Anyone have the same problem?
Question for teachers - do you have a problem picking baby names?
My oldest daughter is a teacher. When she and my son-in-law were pregnant they had a very hard time picking out names. They opted not to find out the sex of the baby ahead of time so they had to come up with both a boy's and a girl's name. In the end, they also opted to keep their list of names private, too, so no one knew the sex or the possible names ahead of time. They had several names picked out and it wasn't until my daughter saw her son after birth that she decided what the name would be. She wanted a name that was not the name of any child she'd ever taught. They had, no laugh, 5 baby name books at their home trying to pick a name. My grandson is 14 months old now and his name is Aiden Nicholas. Of course, at the time, none of us knew another Aiden, but now all of a sudden it seems like it's a really popular name even though we still don't know another Aiden personally. Aiden was chosen because of my son-in-law's Irish heritage. My mom was a teacher for 30 years and when my brothers and I were having kids, she always gave us a hard time about choosing names that were the same as students she had bad associations with. I also have a teaching degree and have been a child care provider in my home for 20 years. When I found out I was pregnant with our youngest (a surprise conceived on birth control pills when our older kids were 17, 15, and 12), I dreaded having to go through the name picking ritual again. It wasn't just my husband and I with name associations now but all 3 of our older kids had some pretty strong opinions on names for their new baby sibling. We didn't all finally agree on a name until a couple days before I went into labor. Good thing she came 7 days past her due date!
Reply:Sort of...I mean if I really like a name that reminded me of a problem child I didn't dwell on that at all,but it did conjure up that memory....I just tried to stay away from the overly used names at the time I had my 4 kids, which wasn't easy until I decided to use a few family names and names I had always liked,or ones that had meaning to me behind the name...=)Good luck on naming yours!
Jr. High / Middle school, 23 yrs.
Reply:YESSSSSSSSS all the time. I use to love certain names, and then I had students who ruined it for me :-( That's why I like more original names so that no one in the past or future well mess it up for me. good luck!
Reply:My mom (who is a teacher) said that she would have the same problem.
I suggest choosing a name that you haven't had for a student or a name that belonged to a student you really liked.
Reply:I did! I ttaught preschool while pregnant and every name we came across would send chills down my spine. If we'd had a girl..she'd have no name! Luckily, my husband said Ian for a boy...I had never taught an 'Ian' and fell in love with it!! Good luck!
Reply:yes. trying to find a name that hasn't belonged to someone you have taught over the years...
my nan was also head of a school, so even more names than just one class!
Reply:I haven't even started teaching yet but all the experience I've had in classrooms bring up some bad images with names....i totally understand.
Reply:my aunt has taught for many years herself and picking names was prettty hard for her too her are some names that possibly you couldn't have run in to..............

Reply:I'll be a teacher in 2011 and I can imagine it would be very difficult for me also.
Reply:My parents certainly did - my brother was eventually named by a poll of my dad's tutor group :)
Reply:Lol, my mom was a teacher for many years. She'd swear up and down that she'd never name one of her children Keith, and that we better not either! :)
Reply:oohh yeah, Joshua and Jacob come to mind. Awful awful!
Good luck finding a good name~

Reply:I highly doubt this is the case, but on the off-chance that you actually aren't 11, and actually are having sextuplets:
I'll be honest- I think you could do better with many of the names you already have, sorry.
Makayla is ugly, trendy, and terrible, in a few words. All the Mc/Mac/Ma names look awful on paper and sound ghetto and trashy. Michaela is pronounced the same, but the difference is that it's a valid, classic name that will last your daughter forever, instead of being cute for 10 years and ugly after that, so I'd strongly suggest that in lieu of Makayla.
I do like the name Alexia (it's the name of a good friend of mine), but I'm just telling you now, it also happens to be the name of a rather unfortunate brain disease in which the patient loses all ability to read. In other words, it might not be the best idea if you care about those things. I'd use Alexandra or even Alexandria instead.
Kristina is a misspelling of Christina that I don't care for one bit. If you mean Christina, and will pronounce it Christina, why not just use Christina? It's a classier (and valid) spelling, so don't butcher a lovely name, please.
Sierra is okay, but I'm not fond of it personally- I think it sounds a little tacky/trashy- it's a personal opinion I guess, but either way I wouldn't use it. It also sounds way too similar to Sara, which I think is definitely a better choice, as it's a gorgeous classic. I also really like Isabella.
As for the boys, I suppose Christian is okay, but if you intend to have a little Christina/Kristina, it sounds too similar, so I'd advise you to choose one or the other.
Francesco, I'm not sure of- unless you're actually Hispanic, in which case it would have a cultural tie, I guess.

Do you think the meaning of a babies name should be just as important as picking the name?
Should the meaning effect your decision?
Do you think the meaning of a babies name should be just as important as picking the name?
Absolutely. There are many people who give their cihldren names and do absolutely no research. Here's a few examples...
-My best friend named her son Cameron only to discover that Cameron means crooked nose.
-Many people are naming their daughter Kennedy which sounds like a cute name for a little girl. But if they researched the name they would find that Kennedy means ugly face.
Alot of people don't care what's behind the name but I would like my children to know why mommy picked the name she did. I have a feeling it would mean alot to them.
Reply:It's more important to me for a name to be classic and historical. A good example of this is Claudia, it possibly means 'lame' but it has a lot of depth and history as it was popular with the Romans.
Another example is Persephone, it is sometimes suggested that it means 'person killer' but it doesn't bother me because it has a lot of mythology behind it.
If a name doesn't have much history to it, then I would look at the meaning. I wouldn't choose a name that didn't have either a meaning to the name or a historical depth.
Reply:Well, if possible, I think it is good to find a name that your really like the pronounciation, spelling and meaning of. However, when picking a name, if you find one that you really really like but it has a weird meaning, still go with that name. In retrospect, I don't think the meaning should affect your decision, but if there is a really nice meaning that has real significance to you, stick with it.
I say pick the name you like, even if you don't like its meaning :)
Reply:that depends on if you are worried about the meaning i have a son named Beriah but it means 'son of evil' the only reason why i picked it was because i never heard it before and thought it sounded nice on the other hand i have a son named Odin who was the god of was in the norse times and i like the thought the the name had that power behind it so i guess it just depends on the name and what you want out of it
a powerful or pretty meaning or an unusual name ;)
Reply:You know the old saying, "you are what you eat"? That's true to an extent. I also feel that you are what you are named. Think about it, if your name was Monte you would have different experiences than if your name was, oh I don't know, lets say Vincent.
People perceive names differently, they conger images. That's why we cringe we we here of people naming their son Mowgli.
America is one of the only countries that don't put two thoughts into the meaning of the monikers given to their children. We give girls, boys names and make up crazy names for our sons. A name says a lot about you, where you come from, family history, it can give you power, it can help you stand out, it can encourage giggles, it can help you be remembered or feared.
I know most of us would never name our child Adolf %26amp; hopefully think twice about calling our child Enigma, because when you come down to it a rose by any other name might not smell as sweet.
Reply:It did affect the way I named my children in a small way. We have Declan which means Man of Prayer, but we are not religious, I just didn't think the name was offensive.
My second son Jacob is funny because I really wanted to name him Hamish and my husband hated the name. When we chose Jacob and I looked it up I found that it meant the same as Hamis and that was Substitute. I thought it was funny because I was substituting Hamish with Jacob.
For a girl I really liked Molly, but found it meant "sea of bitterness" so chose not to use it as I didn't like this meaning. Instead we chose Lucy which means Bringer Of Light, which she is.
I looked up the meanings and if they weren't offensive or nasty I used them.
Reply:Not at all...I have found a number of different "meanings" for my sons name so whos to say which one is right, or if in fact, they werent all just made up? My husband and I put a lot of thought into our sons name. Occasionally, people repeat it and pull a strange face, but mostly people say its a beautiful name that theyve never heard before.
His name is Graeson and we chose it for many reasons but mainly because my dad, Graham, died before he could meet his first grandchild. We wanted a name to honour my dad but didnt want our son to grow up with the stigma of being named after his grandad. We wanted him to be his own person with his own name.
Reply:The meaning will effect the decision for me. If I like the name but hate the meaning then I will not take it. If I love the meaning but hate the name I will never take it. I think the name is more important than the meaning, but it is best to get the best of both worlds.

Reply:i dont really care.
if the name is beautiful then i dont care.
if it has a really nice meaning then that is a plus, but i dont think it really matters.
maybe if it had a really terrible meaning i wouldnt choose it but it depends on differnt people and what they believe in.
Reply:Not at all, in my opinion. How many times in your daily life does the meaning of YOUR name come up? Probably never for most of us. Name meanings aren't important anymore. No one uses them, most people don't even know what their name means! And they definitely don't know what their friends and family's names mean. Hope this helps!
Reply:No. What it means to you and your partner is important, not the meaning behind the name. There are heaps of beautiful names with silly or horrible meanings. If you like the name and it has significance, then go with it.
Hope I helped,
Charlie

Reply:It really depends on the meaning. If it means something like, Sad, Depressed, etc. then yeah, it'd definitely affect my decision. But if it was something like, Pottery Maker, I wouldn't care.
Reply:I couldn't care less what a name means. My name means "pure." Ok, so? I never wonder what a person's name means. I'm more interested in the sound of the name and whether it suits the person.
Reply:Depends on your preference. My preference would be no it shouldn't matter... My daughters name is Kali, who name is derived from the hindu goddess of distruction, but that doesn't matter to me. I liked the name.
Reply:I don't understand why the "meaning" is important to begin with.
Reply:No, I dont think it should. Like if you really liked a name the meaning shouldnt affect your decision.
Reply:No, I don't think so.
Reply:not really

What baby names are you SICK to death of?
If I meet another baby girl named EMMA, Im gonna throw up. Whats the worst name you've ever heard someone give their child?
What baby names are you SICK to death of?
I know exactly what you are talking about. Most of the names on the top 100 list are really beautiful but when every other kid has them they lose their charm. I'm frustrated that the names I picked for my two daughters are moving up the list. Well, their nicknames are. My oldest is named Annabel after the poem by Edgar Allan Poe. I've had this named picked out since I read the poem in high school. Back then it was Brianna, Ashley, Brittany and Kaitlyn. Anna is now #32, which is actually down from previous years. My second daughter is named Mariella. We call her Ella and of course, it's moving on up. It's now #15. Four years ago so many people told me it was too old-fashioned. I liked that not many people had it and now it is one of those names. Now, I understand that while a name may not be popular in one area it is in another and obviously this was the case - I had no idea Ella was as popular as it was and still is. So, I get pretty frustrated when I see how many Annas and Ellas there are in their new school. (We moved)
The worst name for a boy - Homer. Richard Gere named his son that and some other celebrity, too. For a girl - I guess I'm sick of the Sierras and Savannahs. And Cheyenne. But, that's me - I understand that some people love these names. I don't know if I have ever heard of something really horrible for girls - maybe if someone named them Ethel or Bertha but the popularity of some names today does drive me to not like a certain name.
Reply:You asked two questions so I will answer them both.

Aaralyn/Aralyn- This name isen't in the top 1000 and it's pronounced like Caralyn without the c. I think it's pretty.
Adelyn/Adalyn- This is pronounced like Madelyn without the m. It's def. something you don't hear that much.
Analeigh- A beautiful name that a lot of people seem to like, but they don't use it.

Why do parents feel the need to invent baby names these days?
How many babies are going to have names like strippers or mediums?
Why do parents feel the need to invent baby names these days?
They are trying to be "Uneek" but all i see is they are being "Stoopid."
Reply:Some of them are great! I think it is wonderful when kids have unique names that are pretty. Some of them I don't like so much but who am I to tell parents what to name their child, it's better than having another person with the same name as 3 other people in the room with them. I think it is weird when people just switch the spelling of a name to be unique though.
Reply:well because they wanna be unique and have something that not a lot of ppl/animals have. and remember everyone has a different opinion so what may sound horrendous to you someone else may love. life would be so dull if we all liked the same names and stuck with classic instead of being original. dontcha think??
Reply:i understand wanting to be unique and i like alot of unique names.

Reply:Im not sure what "weird" is to you, but I do agree some names are kind of strange..but I much prefer different names, than the usual ones that everyone has. When I was in school, I always had to have my last initial because there was ALWAYS another girl with my name...and I HATED IT!
I have not met anyone with my sons name and I love his name, and so does everyone that knows him :)
And I think it is a little more unique than the usual, Jack, John, Matt..not those exact but you know..

However some of the older names are truly just boring and too many people have the same name: Mike, Mary, Jessica etc... (not bad names just overly used)
I like the idea of newer names but I agree that some are off the charts awful!!!
Reply:I would HATE to have a boring run of the mill name.
Having a unique name works well for me because Im no run of the mill girl!
Having this name gave me confidence as a kid that I was special and made me grow to respect individuality :)
Reply:I know what you mean. I guess it's because they think that by using a different and unique name, somehow that will rub off on the child. I think it just makes them sound stupid and sets the kid up to hate their name.
Reply:Tell me about it. I'm a cashier and it's hard to not laugh at some names on credit cards that i have to process. Parents are hippies.

Why weren't names used in cemetery plots for infants and older babies more than 100 years ago ?
Some older than a year old were simply listed as baby.
Why weren't names used in cemetery plots for infants and older babies more than 100 years ago ?
You have to understand in most U.S. states birth certificates weren't issued until the first part of the 20th century. They were not requirement in order to go to school, get a job, join the military, even apply for a social security number once Social Security went into effect or for anything.
Therefore a lot of babies were not named.
Reply:Allot of parents did not name babies that lived only a couple of days. If a baby was still born the parents rarely picked a name. Some babies were born to early and lived on a few minutes or even as much as a few days.
Some people were afraid to name babies that lived a short time. They felt it would be harder to live without them if they were named.
Some people held onto customs of not giving the baby a name for many reasons.
People had allot of different reasons for not naming babies about 100 years ago.
Superstitions and customs depending on their beliefs would not name an infant or older baby.
Another reason as to why some babies don't have names is because if the mother dies in child-birth and the baby also dies. Husbands left the name picking upto the mothers. And this is another reason why babies do not have names when they are buried especially if they only lived a couple of days.
I found this link very interesting and may give you an answer to your question. Naming children in early New England.
Alot of this leads back to customs and superstitions.
Reply:The earlier answer, that births weren't registered, so the name was not on record, seems reasonable to me. Many of my ancestors came to New France (Quebec) in the 17th century. Unless an infant was stillborn, the baby was immediately baptized and named. The death was also recorded in church records but I was initially shocked to discover that infants were often buried in "communal" graves. When I realized the high rate of infant mortality in those days, it didn't seem so shocking. There are many heartbreaking instances in my records where a woman gave birth to 14 or 16 children, and only one or two survived infancy or outlived her.
Reply:Generally these were babies who were still-born or only lasted a few days and they weren't named back then. I had a grandmother who had 3 still-borns and none of them were named. It was the custom.
Reply:I have seen "Baby Smith" aged as much as a year on census records. Some of out our ancestors didn't name children as fast as we do. As to why, I can't say.
Reply:Some cultures don't name their babies until they survive past five days.
Reply:because money was scarce back then and you paid by the letter for masons to engrave headstones.Wealthier people had epitaphs and huge stones..sculptures ..poor people often had unmarked graves
Reply:some did, some didnt- it depended upon the parents of the deceased child...just like today.
Reply:because of the high infant death rate would be
a good reason back then

What is your personal opinion on these baby names?
GIRLS -
Geniviene
Daniella
Irene
Elizabeth
Bridgette
BOYS -
Caleb
Derek
Lance
Owen
And then...
What about middle names to them?
Please help me..
Even if you don't like the names.
What is your personal opinion on these baby names?
In order,
girls:
1. Elizabeth
2. Daniella
3. Bridgette
4. Irene
5. Genivieve
boys:
1. Caleb
2. Lance
3. Derek
4. Owen
Reply:My favorite girl names are Daniella and Bridgette (I prefer Bridget)
Genvieve is a bit too much for me, I like Jennifer (Jenny).
Irene is a bit too old fashion for my taste.
Elizabeth is a wonderful name but I prefer it as a middle name.
The reason I picked Daniella and Bridget is because Daniella is really close to one of my favorite names Danielle, and Bridget is just sooo adorable for a little girl and is yet very mature (same goes for Daniella).
My favorite boy names are Owen and Derek
Lance is just to manly for my taste. lol
And Caleb is a bit overused in this country as it is.
The reason I picked Owen and Derek is because Owen (Owen Wilson) is like my favorite actor, and after watching so many of his movies such as Wedding Crashers and Drillbit Taylor I fell in love with the name. I also read a book recently called Just Listen by Sarah Dessen and anyways there was a character in the book named Owen Armstrong and the way Sarah Dessen describes Owen made me feel like Owen was a very strong masculine name that is also really sweet and adorable at the same time. Derek on the other hand is a name that I've always loved as a little girl, I would always change Ken's name to Derek (the barbie dolls), lol. I just always thought of Derek as a prince charming kind of guy.
Reply:Genivieve - the correct spelling is Genevieve. I like it.
Daniella - Dislike.
Irene - Ok, but I much prefer Eirene (eye-REE-nee).
Elizabeth - Great classic.
Bridgette - I think the spelling is a bit silly, Bridget is fine. I also prefer Brigitte/Brigitta "bri-GEE-tuh".
Caleb - Ok, but quite popular. I'm not a fan of Biblical names.
Derek - A very low-class name where I live.
Lance - Really not a fan.
Owen - Meh. Ok.
Reply:Genivieve- I like it, Genivieve Marie?
Daniella-Its nice, dont hear it that that much, Danielle Rosetta?
Irene- I personally dont like Irene, and i hear it alot, Irene Anne?
Elizabeth- I really like this name, so pretty, Elizabeth Rose?
Bridgette-I hear this way too much and dont like it, Bridgette Laura?
Caleb- Unique, i like it, Caleb Jeffrey?
Derek- Very common :/, Derek Joshua?
Lance-Sounds very mature, its ok, Lance Phillip?
Owen-its ok, Owen Alec?
Reply:GIRLS -
Genivieve-Feminine, but too old fashioned, Genivieve Fae
Daniella-i like this one, pretty and unique, Daniella Nikole
Irene-this is my aunts name, so i am a little partial to it, Irene Grace
Elizabeth-common, but graceful, Elizabeth Vashti (you would want to pair it with a unique name)
Bridgette-cute, Bridgette Diane
BOYS -
Caleb-good, Caleb Alex
Derek-Derek Luke
Lance-I like this name, but maybe only cuz its the name of my boyfriend!
how about Lance Micheal
Reply:Your choices are really neat
Genvieve---really nice, not to common, you don't hear it a lot
Daniella----really Beautiful,
Irene-----its ok, sounds like an old woman name
Elizabeth---cute name, flows with anything
Bridgette----cute name, don't hear a lot
all your boys names are really nice
i like them all
Reply:i like daniella for a girl bc it sounds elegent and it's not that common. you wouldnt want her to have a name and be like someone else. i think daniella elizabeth sounds nice for a girl bc its 2 of the choices and it goes good together. i used to watch a show about a cute guy named caleb :) so i like that name. ummm caleb thomas works lol
Reply:Ok... Love Genevieve... it's French and very beautiful... you could call her Genny
I like Daniella, but prefer Danielle
Not so much Irene... kind like a Grandma name
Bridgette is cool, but not one of my favorites.
Caleb I love
Derek, not so much
Lance is great
Owen will throw you from the train (Ha ha the movie Throw Momma from the Train?)
As far as middle names, I like Genevieve Danielle and Bridgette Elizabeth.
For boys, I like Caleb Daniel and Lance Michael.
Hope that helps!
Reply:Genivieve-very pretty.
Daniella-my favorite and one of my favorite girl names ever
Irene-don't like but only because I knew someone nasty by this name

Reply:I like Daniella, Caleb and Owen. They are lovely names.

Reply:Elizabeth, Bridget[spelled this way] and Owen are my favorites.

Reply:i like them all except irene (sounds too old - just my opinion), genivieve and derek. not sure about middle names.

Elizabeth-nice

Reply:I like Daniella, Caleb and Owen. They are lovely names.
Elizabeth is ok but not one of my favourites.
Reply:Elizabeth, Bridget[spelled this way] and Owen are my favorites.
Reply:Years ago I dated a wonderful girl whose real name was Lisbeth....not Elizabeth but Lisbeth and that name has stayed with me for years
Reply:i like ELIZABETH an DANIELLA
Reply:i like them all except irene (sounds too old - just my opinion), genivieve and derek. not sure about middle names.
Reply:I only really like Genivieve of those. Or Bridget but not Bridgette.
Reply:It depends on the last name (If it sounds good with the last name)
I would suggest whatever you like
Reply:I like Genevieve.

What do you think about these unusual baby names?
Please could you rate out of 10 what you think of the following baby names for my unborn twins. (Boy and Girl)
Boy = Riley Cy Barros
Girl = Remy Rose Barros
What do you think about these unusual baby names?
omg congrats they are absolutely gorgeous names them babies are gonna be so cool and popular in school with them names riley and remy really match for twins the names blend in perfectly with each other .i wish you and your family every happiness with the birth of these twins once again congrats xxxp.s please keep these names
Reply:Remy is a lovely name. I'm not too sure about Riley, it's too American for me. I'm all for unusual names providing they sound nice and aren't too silly. Does Cy sound like Sigh? I'm not too sure about that middle name but it's your choice after all.
Remy=9
Riley=3
Some unusual boy names I like are: Asa, Jethro, Jonah, Emile and Theo.
Reply:I absolutely ADORE them both! Only thing is I don't like them together because Riley and Remy are quite similar...
but I'm torn between them as I equally adore both of them!!! I'd give them both a 10 out of 10, but I would not not not use them together - as a combo I'd give it lower as I hate the matching twinny thing people do. But it's a tough one as they're both lovely!!!
Reply:Riley is very popular, but I've never liked it myself. I like the middle name Cy :)
Remy to me is a boys name (just because of Gambit from X-Men ... lol, I'm a dork). The middle name Rose is lovely.
I give them both a 7/10 :)
But really, as long as you like the names, it doesn't matter what other people think.
Reply:they are both ok
i like riley for a boy but definately not for a girl
remy is a bit odd and sounds a bit boyish. renee would be prettier, or reia.
good luck and congratulations
Reply:First things first, CONGRADULATIONS
secondly, i love the names but i especially love remy its so cute
good luck, cuz with twins, your gunna need it :D
Reply:Riley Cy-- 8/10
Remy Rose-- 3/10 (Sorry, I just don't like when people have the same name as an alcoholic beverage.)
But its just my personal opinion. But I really like the suggestion of Riley Rose. That gets a 10/10
Reply:I agree w/the person above....make Ryleigh the girl and Remy the boy....I love Remy, but to me it's a boys name. If you just make that switcharoo, I think they're adorable!
Reply:Riley Cy reminds me of Miley Cyrus and I don't know about you but I defiantly would not like that. Putting that aside though I would give Riley a 5 and Remy an 8 (=
Reply:remmey rose/ 3
i personaly would give my daughter a name with 2 r's. rose is nice but remmey ;S
riley/5 sounds a bit girlish tbf
but its your choice just telling you my opinion
xxxx
